Hachi opened, at its present location in South Yarra, in April 2015. The store concept was based on two similar boutique pet stores, in Tokyo and New York, that had also brought a new style of pet product retailing to those cities, a style that has since caught on in other locations.

Clothing

Established brands from Japan and Europe feature among our top-quality pet fashion clothing ranges, regularly updated, and some exclusive to Hachi in Australia. We are also continually on the look-out for new Australian products, that meet our strict quality standards.

Our clothing ranges include T-shirts, shirts, skirts, pants, pyjamas, coats, jackets, raincoats, hoodies, jumpers, boys wear, girls wear, and all kinds of themed costumes. Decked out by Hachi your pet will be the life of any party.

A fashion boutique for dogs? Well you might ask, and many people reacted with surprise when we first opened. But now their perception of pet fashion is changing, to not only whole-heartedly endorse the concept, but also to acknowledge the many benefits the products provide.

Dogs can catch a cold just like humans, so why risk ill health from a stroll in the rain when attractive, effective raincoats are on offer at Hachi. Even the most timid terrier will feel snug and secure when the thunder claps and lightning flashes. Nor need walkies on a cold winter’s day threaten your dog’s well-being, when you can choose the perfect antidote from our selection of jumpers, jackets, coats and hoodies.

And not forgetting the burning Australian summer sun, that can easily damage the skin of many dog breeds. We stock special-purpose T-shirts and light-weight pullovers that ward off the sun’s harmful rays.

Another benefit of all these clothing items is they protect your own clothes and home from unwanted dog hairs. At Hachi, practicality and fashion go hand-in-hand, or should we say, hand-in-paw.

Food

Our range of carefully selected treats for dogs and cats are the highest quality on the pet market, and include 100% organic items. All products:

- contain no artificial preservatives or colours

- are made in Australia - contain no meat by

-products or rawhide - are low in fat

Accessories

Whether it be collars, leads and harnesses, or pet beds and pushers, our accessories ranges will put your pooch at the forefront of style and comfort, indoors and outdoors, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Wearing a stylish pyjama outfit, and ensconced in a one-of-a-kind bed, sleeping has never been such a fashion statement for your Fido.

Our Name - Hachi

This practice continued for eleven years, until the dog’s death. Over time the story became known in the area, and eventually gained broader coverage throughout Japan, the dog eventually becoming a national hero, now immortalised by a statue of dog and master outside Shibuya Station.

Understandably, The Tale of Hachiko is one of the best-known and most-loved stories in popular Japanese literature.

The word hachi has three meanings in Japanese, but none of these explain why we use this word for the name of our shop. Many people would be aware of the 2009 British-American movie Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, starring Richard Gere and Joan Allen, about an Akita Inu dog. It is after this faithful, loving dog, Hachi-ko, that our shop is named. This movie was a remake of the earlier Japanese film Hachi-ko Monogatari, which means The Tale of Hachiko.

Both films are based on the true story about Hachi, born in Tokyo in 1923. At the age of one Hachi was acquired by Professor Hidesamuro Ueno of the University of Tokyo. The loving pet would farewell its master at the front gate each morning, and watch as the Professor walked to the local station for the trip to work.

Hachi soon learned the location of the station, and began the habit of walking there to greet the train carrying his master home at night. Less than a year later, in 1925, the Professor unexpectedly died whilst at lecture, yet the loyal Hachi maintained its practice of going to the station every evening in the forlorn hope of greeting and walking home with the Professor.
